chelmsford's club for the 'indie'pendently minded

bitterscene is an 'indie'pendent club night which usually takes place on the last Wednesday of the month in the Bassment Club, Chelmsford.

Our dj's play classic & new 'real' indie tunes, C86/Sarah, french pop / bubblegum / northern soul / 60's beats & garage, and a splash of punk.

PLUS each month we put on a couple of bands that we have experienced live and we think you would enjoy. Doors 8:30pm, bands start between 9:15 and 10:00 and finish in plenty of time for last trains. Entrance is usually £5 or £6 depending who we have playing (sometimes even cheaper). Drink prices were in line with pubs not clubs, but are currently cheaper than many bars around town.
Here's our latest flyer.

We've been at it since 2001 and have had some excellent bands play for us during that time, including: Vic Godard & Subway Sect, The Broken Family Band, The Long Blondes, Holly Golightly .... check out our live archive.

bitterscene is also an indie record label. The second single by The Brights is currently available for mail order and now by download. Go to our label page to find out more.

Next event: wednesday 27 august - playing live ... Mono Taxi plus Jacksons warehouse

MySpace link thingy: www.myspace.com/bitterscene

Playing their own take on swooning indie pop, MONO TAXI are an Anglo-French outfit whose songs fizz with the same warmth and humanity as bands such as Drugstore, Joy Zipper and Helium

Frontwoman Ellice Williams croons deliciously over fuzzy guitar chords and clattering drum beats. Wallowing in a languid, wistful moodiness and veering between Mary Chain like guitar noise and quiet moments of reflection.

'This gang mash-up the best bits of Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and Pixies into an exceptional slab of Euro-indie." The Fly. "The delicately cool sound of Bardot et Serge, after they've ditched their pedalo and discovered power chords." NME. "The type of band who demand your attention at all times...they switch from ballsy, angular, stutter-punk to poignant melody via tumultuous power chord thrash like their lives depended on it." DROWNED IN SOUND. Imagine The Stooges doing power pop..." WHISPERIN & HOLLERIN.

Hailing all the way from .... Basildon .. support comes from Jacksonwarehouse. Been a few years since they played for us, so glad to have them back with their enthusiastic indie-rockedness.
