chelmsford's club for the 'indie'pendently minded

bitterscene is an 'indie'pendent club night which usually takes place on the last Wednesday of the month in the Bassment Club, Chelmsford.

Our dj's play classic & new 'real' indie tunes, C86/Sarah, french pop / bubblegum / northern soul / 60's beats & garage, and a splash of punk.

PLUS each month we put on a couple of bands that we have experienced live and we think you would enjoy. Doors 8:30pm, bands start between 9:15 and 10:00 and finish in plenty of time for last trains. Entrance is usually £5 or £6 depending who we have playing (sometimes even cheaper). Drink prices were in line with pubs not clubs, but are currently cheaper than many bars around town.
Here's our latest flyer.

We've been at it since 2001 and have had some excellent bands play for us during that time, including: Vic Godard & Subway Sect, The Broken Family Band, The Long Blondes, Holly Golightly .... check out our live archive.

bitterscene is also an indie record label. Go to our label page to find out more.

Bitterscene 100 is amazingly our 100th event ...

Few monthly clubs manage to hold on to their crowd or their passion for this long luckily ours are both still intact because we love the music the bands and the fans.

Bitterscene 100 is a treat for us as we have three of our favourite bands back helping us celebrate.

The Brownies take pole position and return having played twice before, brilliantly out of step with current trends, 3 girl 2 guy riot of heart-in-mouth moments and a hatred so finely tuned it's sexy, they come to us 2 days after the release of their highly praised debut album "Our knife your back" which sums up the band. The Brownies are truly great and destined for big things.

Also returning for a third time Fuck Dress would normally warrant headline status. Europes finest situationist prankster noiseniks from Norwich are big in Spain and Italy, where debut Suburban Nietzsche Freak (and its crazed video (check out youtube)) became a hit last year. The grumpy german philosopher angle continues on new single “Ultra now” as Goethe grumbles on the speed of modern life.

“There seems to be no limit, no depths to which the tabloids won't sink” ..... Formed in November 2008, The Tabloids make a swift return to bitterscene where they played their first proper gig in January. Their sound is dirty and loose and they're writing songs at a rate of knots we can barely keep up with. We thoroughly approve of all their reference points (Orange Juice, The Smiths, Billy Bragg) and are 'simply thrilled' to say The Tabloids are our new favourite band.
