chelmsford's club for the 'indie'pendently minded

This website doesn't look very nice on IE browser - sorry. We are trying to fix it. x

bitterscene is an 'indie'pendent club night which usually takes place on the last Wednesday of the month in the Bassment Club, Chelmsford.

Our dj's play classic & new 'real' indie tunes, C86/Sarah, french pop / bubblegum / northern soul / 60's beats & garage, and a splash of punk.

PLUS each month we put on a couple of bands that we have experienced live and we think you would enjoy. Doors 8:30pm, bands start between 9:15 and 10:00 and finish in
plenty of time for last trains. Entrance is usually £5 or £6 depending who we have playing (sometimes even cheaper). Drink prices were in line with pubs not clubs, but are currently cheaper than many bars around town. Here's our latest flyer.

We've been at it since 2001 and have had some excellent bands play for us during that time, including: Standard Fare, The Joy Formidable, Allo Darlin', The School, Vic Godard & Subway Sect, The Broken Family Band, The Long Blondes, Holly Golightly .... check out our live archive.

bitterscene is also an indie record label. Go to our label page.

Standard Fare are back at bitterscene - hooray! The Sheffield trio are absolute favourites of ours and we love and play to death their debut album The Noyelle Beat.

Their songs are quirky, lovelorn, youthful and energetic.

"A riot of hormones, cut-to-the-chase lyrics, bolshie girl-boy vocals and jingle-jangle propusion...The best and most loveable aspects of indie guitar music." The Sunday Times

“These indie pop darlings combine raw power and passion with excitable vocals and an ever present indie aesthetic. Infectiously catchy pop.” - Subba-Cultcha

Indie pop duo Let’s Whisper come to bitterscene all the way from Burlington, Vermont. This is a side project from Colin Clary and Dana Kaplan of sunshine pop band The Smittens - faves at Indietracks - and they've just released their debut album 'The Shortest Days', on London-based WeePOP! Records.

The album, eight years in the making, spans the melancholy and majesty of everyday life. In short, it’s a celebration.

Perky pop, jellybean kinda sound that evokes blue skies and sunshine! Just what we all need.
